Le Barricade at the entrance of the Cobra exhibition, Internationale Tentoonstelling van Experimentele Kunst at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam from 03-28 November 1949. Constant painted this very large painting of 372 by 300 cm on location just before the opening of the exhibition. Eugene Brands and Karel Appel also painted large scale paintings on location, specially for the exhibition.

A gathering of the members of the Høst group and De Experimentele Groep in Holland, most likely in preparation for the exhibition Internationale Tentoonstelling van Experimentele Kunst at the Stedelijk Museum in November of that year. On the wall, partly visible, is Constant's painting "Witte vogel", 1948. Constant was secretary of De Experimentele Groep in Holland and his living room often the head quarters for the meetings.
