What perspective does the modern artist take on the major political events of the past half-century?
This is the theme explored by the book, which sets works of art against events that have occurred since 1933 (the rise of totalitarian regimes, international and civil wars, political crises). These works give visual form to the upheavals of the century and express what is at stake in them.
The book is structured around four major chronological sections. Historians, art historians, philosophers, and contemporary artists contributed to its writing; each, in their own way, sought to identify and examine different aspects of the relationship between art and History in the twentieth century
