Episode 19, 14 May with Bart Rutten. In the 1950s, Cobra artist Constant Nieuwenhuys imagined a new world, without possessions or war, in which everyone was free to play and travel. He called this art project of a utopian world New Babylon. In the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, 75 years later, international artists now imagine their ideal, different world. Director of the Centraal Museum Bart Rutten travels with them in their imagination.

Part of my work is humanising technique, like New Babylon (1959-1974) by Constant. According to Constant technique is not an alienating mode but a way to bring man closer to its nature. Homo ludens. After Constant's vision I tried to give the viewer an impression that New Babylon exists. I showed the work on a multi screen video. On the old black and white TV one could see the images of labour and the visions on technique from the past. On the projection one could see images of modern day, modern science fiction and last the image of New Babylon over Groningen.

A video installation of 13 short films (10 min) by Julian Rosenfeldt starring Cate Blanchet. The installation premiered in 2015 in Australia. The short where Cate Blanchet plays a homeless man is amongst others based on the text from Constant's Manifest for the Experimental Group Holland in 1948.

For the exhibition Metahaven Selected Projects 2010-2014 at the Cobra museum, January 2014, designers collective Metahaven created the movie City Rising featuring Constant's New Babylon works.

Spirit of Cobra, a major exhibition exploring the roots and inspiration of the European avant-garde Cobra movement, on view November 8, 2013 through May 18, 2014.

Video edit of the opera Constant Tranzit (2013) by Anna Mikhailova. The opera was composed for her Master Music Theater at Codarts and is based on the life of Constant Nieuwenhuys, who worked on his New Babylon project for more than ten years.
