Picasso & Matisse. Beauty is a line
CID
3549
In collaboration with Kunstmuseum Pablo Picasso in Münster, Rijksmuseum Twenthe presents works by Picasso and Matisse, in a double exhibition across the line in the visual arts. Based on works from the graphic oeuvre of these giants of modern art, and many other works by Toorop, Kirchner and Van Heemskerck, among others, the museum studies the line as the foundation of modern art.
As the masters of modern art, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse mastered the art of the line like no other. Because the line is the ultimate tool for the modern artist at the beginning of the 20th century, when art increasingly revolved around interpretation, expression and form. Lines give meaning to forms; lines have so much expressiveness that with a simple stroke of the pen a recognizable face, figure or object can be put on paper; lines separate essentially from side issue, undress, until only the essence remains. Aided by our imagination, the line is the language of modern art.
