The Netherlands has been represented at the Venice Biennale since its very first edition in 1895. Over the past 130 years, its presence has evolved from a modest contribution to a nineteenth-century salon exhibition into an established place at one of the world’s most influential art platforms. Art historian Nathalie Zonnenberg researched all Dutch participations at the request of the Mondriaan Fund and describes them in 56 concise chapters, one for each edition in which the Netherlands took part. The result is a comprehensive historical overview showing how the Netherlands has presented itself in Venice over 130 years, and the artistic, cultural, and political and social considerations behind this presence.
