The 'Utrecht' shelf was part of a commission by designer Martin Visser for Spectrum. The relationship between Constant and Visser goes back to at least 1948, when Visser, who at the time worked at department store De Bijenkorf, organised an exhibition with works by the artists of the Dutch Experimental Group (Nederlands Experimentele Group), the Dutch prelude to the CoBrA group.

Visser became one of the first collectors of their work. The exhibition at De Bijenkorf did not receive positive press and yet it would not be the last time the department store would collaborate with the Experimental artists.

In 1953 Visser, by now head designer at Spectrum, commissioned Constant to create the 'IJhorst' table series, followed in 1956 by several shelf designs, including the 'Utrecht' shelf.'

In 2022 Studio Rens was asked to design a new colour scheme for these two classical design objects for the New Spectrum Accessories Collection. The result is the 'Utrecht' shelf in three new colours and one in classical black.
