Artists for Peace was the name of an initiative of West German artists founded in 1981 by Eva Mattes, Irmgard Schleier, Peter Homann and others, which supported the peace movement of the time and organized four large concerts under the same name until 1983: on September 12, 1981 in the main auditorium of the University of Hamburg, on November 21, 1981 in the Dortmund Westfalenhalle, on May 9, 1982 in the Berlin Waldbühne, on September 11, 1982 in the Ruhr Stadium in Bochum and on September 2 and 3, 1983 in the St. Pauli Stadium in Hamburg. The movement rallyied against stationing Pershing-2 and Cruise Missiles in Central Europe.
The Bochum concert in 1982 was the biggest of these. More than 200 artists performed in front of around 200,000 spectators, including Esther Bejarano, Harry Belafonte, Joseph Beuys, the Bots, Franz Josef Degenhardt, Katja Ebstein, Maria Farantouri, Gitte Hænning, André Heller, Hanns Dieter Hüsch, Udo Lindenberg, Miriam Makeba, Ulla Meinecke, Bill Ramsey, and Konstantin Wecker.
Among the other speakers was Petra Kelly, who spoke on behalf of the Krefeld appeal. Curt Bois spoke only three sentences: "I'm an old man. I have lived through two world wars. I came here because I want to prevent a third world war from destroying you and your children.”
On the occasion of the demonstration and benefit concert in the stadium in Bochum, September 11, 1982, a series of 15 posters was published, the event poster was by Hundertwasser, the others presented art works by: Alfred Hrdlicka, Antoni Tàpies, Antonio Saura, Constant, Eduardo Arroyo, Gilles Aillaud, Hans Platschek, K.R.H. Sonderbrorg, Larry Rivers, Maria Lassnik, R.B. Kital, Renato Guttuso, Robert Motherwell, Roberto Matta. The event poster was accompanied by a second one designed by Hundertwasser, listing all the names of participating artists and bands.
