Constant in opstand
Interview by Max Arian for De Groene Amsterdammer on the occasion of the exhibition Paintings 1948-1995 at SMA and Aquarellen 1975-1995 and New Babylon 1959-1969 in Gemeentemuseum The Hague.
Constant: 'Kunst speelt sowieso een maatschappelijke rol. Als het niet zo zou zijn, waarom wordt de kunst dan altijd vervolgd? Waarom al die beeldenstormen, verbrandingen, die anti-kunst? Als de vrijheid wordt bestreden, wordt de kunst bestreden. Kunst is het enige symbool van de vrijheid dat levend blijft en dat nooit helemaal om zeep kan worden gebracht.’
"Art always plays a critical part in society. If not, why is art always being persecuted? Why all the iconoclasm, burnings and anti-art? If freedom is being contested, art is bing contested. Art is the only symbol of freedom that can never be fully terminated."
