AVRO Kunst panorama, a series of 13 episodes about art and culture with a new item idea every week. The audience decides throug popular vote which formula will lead to a series. Presentation Nelleke van der Krogt. The first episode is about the history of modern art in the Netherlands with a focus on the difficult start of the artists of CoBrA in Amsterdam in the fourties. An episode suggestion by Eline Timmer and Tom Rooduijn.
About a generation of artists born in the twenties of the twentieth century, who studied at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam during WW II; artist Ger Lataster's example: Paul Césanne; the co-operation between the Vijftigers and the painters of the CoBrA group; the influence of painter Constant; the international group CoBrA members; Jan Sierhuis' start as figurative painter; the rejection of the CoBrA group by the press; the importance of free exhibition space like Gallery 845 of Dolly and Ruud Melchers and Le Canard; the opportunities that Willem Sandberg, director of the Stedelijk Museum, offered innovative artists; the riot around the lecture by communist Dotrement at the Cobra exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; the unprecented succes of that exhibition; the merits of Sandberg for modern art and the modern museum; the possibility to sell work to the city; the optimism and poverty of the fourties.
