From the foreword: A valuable collection of over 300 Cobra-related items came into our possession just a few months ago. We enriched this lot with some equally fine publications on this matter, from various sources, in order to create a rich and most comprehensive collection, which we are happy to presentin this catalogue.  This collection will be exhibited and offered for sale for the first time during the 13th European Antiquarian Bookfair, held at the Amsterdam Rai Congress Centre, February 27, 28 and 29, 1992.

This is the first comprehensive publication on the Dutch painter, Constant Nieuwenhuys, who played a decisive role in the European artistic life, as much through his work as a painter and sculptor as through his theoretical reflection. The period after his New Babylon project is a reconquest of painting in its means as in its ends. Witness and historian of the COBRA movement, close friend of Constant, Jean-Clarence Lambert continues his critical and poetic study of contemporary art with this new publication.

Künstler – Kritisches Lexikon der Gegenwartskunst is a publication that appears four times a year, each edition being a monograph of a particular contemporary artist. This edition from 1992 is dedicated to Constant.

This critical work has as a guiding theme a notion derived from the philosopher Balechard: the material imagination, a notion that played a key role in the Cobra era, which gives its originality and coherence to Jean-Clarence Lambert's critical work, and led him to a precise conception of powers of the creative imagination, defining a reign of images in itself or imaginal reign Constant is mentioned on page 125 and 136.
