Het uitgangspunt is anders dan gebruikelijk in de literatuur over schilderkunst. Niet langer staat het idee achter het werk voorop, maar juist de manier waarop het doek totstandkomt. Hoe kiezen schilders hun verf? In welke traditie zien deze kunstenaars zichzelf? Wat inspireert hen? En wanneer besluiten ze dat een schilderij 'af' is?
